Five Metrics Our Social Managers Actually Watch Every Morning

Ask ten agencies what they check every morning and you will get ten different answers, most of them filled with follower counts and total likes. We do not track either closely, and here is why. Follower count is a lagging indicator that can grow from giveaway farming, and total likes tell you nothing about whether the audience is the right one. What we actually look at every morning across every account is smaller, weirder and much more useful. The first number is saves. When someone saves a post, they are signalling that it is worth returning to, and the algorithm treats saves as the strongest quality signal on most platforms. Second is the ratio of new followers to profile visits — if a thousand people look at your profile and only two follow, something in your bio or pinned content is broken. Third is comment sentiment, which our community managers eyeball manually because no tool reads Aussie sarcasm correctly. Fourth is the earliest three-second retention on video. If your hook does not hold people past three seconds, nothing after it matters. Fifth, and easily the most ignored, is DM reply time during business hours. We aim for under thirty minutes. It sounds tiny, but clients who reply to DMs fast convert enquiries at close to double the rate of those who take hours. None of these metrics look impressive in a monthly report. That is part of why they work. Big aggregate numbers feel good in a boardroom but they rarely tell you what to change tomorrow. A saves drop on a Tuesday tells you exactly which piece of content missed, and a slow DM reply time tells you where the leak in your funnel actually is. The point of tracking daily is not to obsess over tiny swings, it is to catch problems before they compound into a bad month. If you want to see what a report built this way looks like, one of our clients will happily share theirs.
